A Fear of Mediocracy...
When I got my first job as a personal trainer outside of college, I thought I was hot stuff.

I just spent 4 years studying exercise science, had a summer of personal training experience at college, and two awesome internships. So, when I got my first job, I was confident in my skills as a personal trainer.

Long story short, I hated the first gym I worked at so I found another one as soon as I could.

And here is where I learned the truth of my reality...

• Just because you're a “good” personal trainer doesn't mean you will get clients.

• Personal training is much more than picking exercises and counting reps.

• 1-3 hours of personal training per week isn’t what gets clients results.

My journey began at this gym because...
I was coming in with zero clients.

Compared to everyone else I had the least amount of experience.

And I had a fear of inadequacy.
Realizing this, I knew I had to do something about my situation...

- The first step was getting clients:
I did the only thing I could think of, I created a flyer advertising my personal training service and posted it wherever I could. (By the way, when I say “posted” I mean I physically stuck a piece of paper where I thought people might see it.)

To my surprise I got zero new clients.

“Hang on a second, is getting clients hard?” I asked myself.

Luckily, clients organically trickled into the gym, the owner would send some inquires my way, and I said yes to everything.
Realizing this, I knew I had to do something about my situation...

- The second step was getting results for my clients:
I want to help people, that’s why I became a personal trainer, I know how powerful fitness is because I’ve experienced it first-hand. In combination with that, I fear mediocracy. I fear feeling inadequate. This probably says something about my psychology that I’m not digging into, but it benefitted me greatly, so I’m okay with that!

To my surprise I got zero new clients.

My clients would ask me questions I didn't have answers to or come in with aches or pains I couldn't help them with. Wanting to help my clients while also being scared to fail them, because of how I would feel about myself, led me on a journey to kill my mediocre personal training.

I learned a lot. Mostly, what it takes to get results from fitness.

And it takes more than 1-3 hours of personal training per week.
By this point, I had a lot of clients, I was working early mornings, late nights, and weekends.

I told you, I wanted to help people! You do too, right??

Plus, if I’m being honest, I needed the money. I needed to work a lot of hours cause that’s how I got paid and I wanted to work a lot of hours cause that’s how I helped people.

But despite having the answers and skills to get clients results, my clients still weren't seeing the results they wanted.

And this my friend is the great plight of personal training!

I dug myself right into the Personal Training Trap.

Wanting to help people and needing to make money forces us to work crazy hours. We say yes to as many clients as we can because it means helping more people and making more money, but in the process, it makes our personal training service more and more mediocre.

We lose sight of and energy for what really matters, client results.

In fact, we sacrifice client results for more revenue via working more hours.

When in reality client results is the key to unlocking revenue.
